Messaging Insight: Your Message Records
Messaging Insight is the detailed record of every text your business sent and received. This guide covers the nine filters you can combine, what all the totals mean, why Outbound Segments is the figure that matters, and what the screen is genuinely useful for.
What Messaging Insight shows
Messaging Insight is the detailed record of every text your business sent and received. Where Conversations shows you the thread, this shows you the data: how many, which way, what type, and who sent them.
Open it from the left sidebar: expand Analytics and click Messaging Insight.
Narrow it down
The filters are the point of this screen. You can combine:
- Period β Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, This month, Last 30 days, Last 6 months or Custom.
- From date-time and To date-time β down to the hour, not just the day.
- Contact β a specific person in your address book.
- Local number β which of your numbers.
- From number and To number.
- Direction β Inbound or Outbound.
- Type β SMS or MMS.
- Username β which member of your team.
Click Search to apply, Reset to clear.
The totals
Above the table you get Total Messages, then the same figure broken down every useful way: MMS and SMS, Inbound and Outbound, and then all four combinations β Inbound MMS, Inbound SMS, Outbound MMS, Outbound SMS β plus Outbound Segments.
Outbound Segments is the number to watch. A long text is sent as more than one segment, so segments, not messages, are what your sending volume really amounts to. If your message count looks reasonable but your segment count is far higher, your messages are too long.
All the totals reflect the filters above them, and times use your account time zone.
The table
Each row shows the Date and time, Type, Direction, From, To, User and Segment Count. Choose how many rows to display at a time with the Display control.
What to use it for
- Settling a question about a message. Filter by contact and date and you have the record of exactly what was sent, when, and by whom.
- Understanding your volume before a campaign. Segment counts tell you what your normal usage looks like.
- Seeing who is texting. The Username filter shows how messaging is distributed across your team.
- Checking a number is being used. Filter by local number to see whether a line is actually earning its place.
FAQ
Q: What is a segment?
A: The unit a text is sent in. Longer messages take several segments, which is why the segment count can exceed the message count.
Q: Does this include group messages?
A: This is your messaging record. Group campaigns and their credit balance are tracked separately β see Message Credits for Group Messages.
Q: Why do the times look wrong?
A: Times are shown in your account time zone.
Q: Can I filter to one conversation?
A: Filter by Contact, or by From and To number.
