How to Configure Follow Me/Forward for an Extension
Use Follow Me to route calls to your extension across multiple destinations (other extensions or external phone numbers). Follow Me logic is used, where each destination can start ringing after a Delay, ring for a Timeout, and the call connects to the first destination that answers.
What Follow Me/Forward does?
When Follow Me is enabled on an extension:
-
The system attempts to reach you on one or more Destinations (extensions or phone numbers).
-
Each destination can ring immediately or later using Delay.
-
Each destination rings for a set duration using Timeout.
-
If more than one destination rings at the same time, the call connects to the first answer.
-
If nobody answers, the call continues to the next step in your call flow (commonly voicemail, depending on your setup).
Step 1) Open the extension’s Follow Me settings
-
Log in to office.zonitel.com.
-
Go to Administration → Extensions (or your Extensions list).
-
Click the extension you want to edit
. -
Open the Call Forward tab.
-
Find the Follow me section.
Step 2) Enable Follow Me
-
Toggle Follow me ON.
-
You’ll now be able to add destinations.
Step 3) Add your destinations
In the Destinations table, you can fill multiple rows.
Destination (Ext or Phone Number)
-
Enter an extension (example:
201,305, etc.), or -
Enter an external phone number.
-
Best practice: use E.164 format (example:
8339664835).
-
Delay
-
How many seconds to wait before that destination starts ringing?
-
Example:
0= ring immediately.
Timeout
-
How long does that destination ring last once it starts?
-
Example:
30seconds.
Prompt (checkbox)
-
When enabled, the called party is asked to confirm before the call connects (commonly “Press 1 to accept” behavior).
-
Best used for external numbers to avoid calls going straight to a mobile carrier voicemail or another automated system.
Step 4) Save
Click Save to apply your Follow Me routing.
Â
Good to know
-
Delay controls when a destination starts ringing.
-
Timeout controls how long it rings after it starts.
-
Prompt is highly recommended for external numbers to avoid accidental pickup by voicemail/IVR.
Troubleshooting
Calls are not forwarding to my external number
-
Confirm the number is formatted correctly.
-
Make sure Follow Me is toggled ON, and click Save.
-
Try enabling Prompt for the external destination.
My mobile voicemail answers instead of me
-
Enable Prompt so the call only connects when you accept it.
It rings too long (or too short)
-
Adjust the Timeout value.
-
Use Delay to control when other destinations start.
