How to Set an Extension’s Outbound Caller ID (Outbound Number)
Choose an extension’s outgoing number with the number selector, save it and test both the displayed number and the return-call route.
An extension’s Outbound Caller ID Number is the business number presented on its outgoing calls. Choose an available number that customers can call back and that reaches the right team.
Choose the number
- Open Settings → Extensions and confirm the correct location.
- Find the extension and click its pencil under Actions.
- In Extension Settings, find Outbound Caller ID Number.
- Click the pencil beside the current number to open Choose a number.
- Search by name or number and select the business number you want from the list.
- Check the selected number on the extension page, then click Save. Reopen the extension to confirm it was saved.
If the number is missing, check the location and ask an administrator or Zonitel to review its availability for the extension. Do not substitute an unrelated number. Use the selector to close or cancel without a change if you are only reviewing settings.
Test the number and the return call
- Call a phone you control from the exact extension or device you changed. Check the displayed number.
- Call that displayed number back and verify the intended greeting and destination.
- If the wrong number appears, confirm the saved setting and which extension, app or calling mode actually placed the call. Send Support a timestamp with time zone and the expected and displayed numbers.
Keep name, number and incoming routing separate
- User is the name shown internally for the extension. It is not the external business calling name.
- The external calling name is requested on the phone number under Settings → Phone Numbers → Settings → Caller ID.
- Changing the outbound number does not configure the route for incoming calls. Check that route separately in Phone Numbers → Call Flow.
Can extensions share a number?
Yes. Several extensions can use the same available business number, or you can choose separate numbers for departments or locations. Make the choice based on where customers should return the call.
