How to Enable Do Not Disturb from Your Desk Phone
Do Not Disturb stops your extension ringing and sends callers to voicemail. This guide gives the three codes to turn it on, off and toggle it, how to test that it works, the risk of leaving it on, and when forwarding or business hours would serve you better.
What Do Not Disturb does
Do Not Disturb stops your extension ringing. Calls that would have reached you go to your voicemail instead, so the caller can still leave a message rather than hitting a dead end.
It suits a meeting, a lunch break, or an hour when you need to concentrate.
Turn it on and off
Dial these from your own desk phone:
- *78 — turn Do Not Disturb on.
- *79 — turn Do Not Disturb off.
- *77 — toggle, switching it on if it is off and off if it is on.
Wait for the confirmation prompt, then hang up.
The toggle is the one worth learning if you use this daily — one code, no need to remember which state you left it in.
Check it worked
- Dial *78 to turn Do Not Disturb on.
- Call your extension from another phone.
- Confirm your desk phone does not ring and the call goes to voicemail.
- Dial *79 and call again to confirm it rings normally.
Worth doing once, so you trust it when it matters.
Remember to turn it off
This is the real risk with Do Not Disturb: it stays on until you turn it off. Leaving it on overnight means a morning of calls going straight to voicemail while everything looks normal.
- Turn it off as you finish the meeting, not later.
- If your calls seem unusually quiet, dial *79 before assuming it is a slow day.
- If you share coverage with colleagues, tell them when you switch it on so somebody is still answering.
When something else fits better
- Away from the office rather than unavailable? Forwarding sends calls to your mobile instead of voicemail. See How to Forward Calls.
- Want it to ring elsewhere first? See Follow Me.
- Closed for the day? Business hours handle that automatically, every day, without anyone remembering a code. See Business Hours.
