How to Configure Follow Me for an Extension

How to Configure Follow Me for an Extension

Follow Me rings other extensions or phone numbers when someone calls your extension. This guide shows you how to open Follow Me (Call Forward), add your destinations, and use Delay, Timeout and Prompt to ring everyone at once or in order, plus fixes for when a cell voicemail answers instead of you.

Reach an extension at several destinations

Follow Me applies to calls reaching one extension. It does not change the incoming route for the entire business number. Plan the destinations and timing you want, and check how unanswered calls are handled for that extension.

1. Open the extension

  1. Go to Settings → Extensions.
  2. Find the correct extension and click its pencil button.
  3. Choose Follow Me (Call Forward) in Sections.

2. Enable and fill the destination rows

Turn on Follow me. In each row you want to use, enter an extension or complete allowed phone number in Destination (Ext or Phone Number). Do not use a number that routes back to the same extension.

  • Delay: seconds before this destination starts ringing.
  • Timeout: seconds it keeps ringing after starting.
  • Prompt: asks the answering person to confirm before connecting. This is useful for external numbers so a carrier voicemail does not immediately take the call.

3. Choose simultaneous or sequential timing

For simultaneous ringing, set Delay 0 on each used row. For a sequence without overlap, use A: Delay 0 / Timeout 20, then B: Delay 20 / Timeout 20. Delays of 0 and 10 with a 30-second timeout overlap; they do not make one phone stop before the next starts.

Review every destination you want to ring. Do not assume the original desk phone rings in addition to all listed destinations; verify your extension’s behavior in the test.

4. Save and test

  1. Click Save.
  2. Call the extension through its usual route from another phone.
  3. Check each destination, its timing and the confirmation prompt where enabled.
  4. On a second call, do not answer and confirm the intended voicemail or fallback.

Troubleshooting and turning it off

  • No ringing: confirm Follow me is on, the destination is correct and you saved. Check whether another forwarding rule intercepts the call first.
  • Carrier voicemail answers: enable Prompt for the external destination and test again. Review Timeout as well.
  • Too much waiting: shorten the combined delays and ringing times and retest the fallback.
  • Stop using Follow Me: turn Follow me off, save and call again to verify normal extension behavior. This does not disable separately configured number forwarding.
