Adding contacts and importing contacts in Zonitel
Contacts is your address book, so callers show a name instead of a bare number. This guide shows you how to add a contact by hand with only a phone number required, import a CSV, XLS or XLSX file using the example template, follow the result in Recent imports, and export or clean up your list.
Your contacts in Zonitel
Contacts is your address book. Saved contacts show their name instead of a bare number on incoming calls, in call history and in Conversations, and they are what you build group lists from.
Open it by clicking Contacts in the left sidebar.
Add a contact manually
- Click Contacts in the left sidebar.
- Click New contact.
- Enter the Phone Number. Select the country first, then type the local number. Everything else is optional.
- Fill in First Name, Last Name, Email and Date of Birth as needed.
- Click Create contact.
Date of Birth is worth filling in if you send birthday messages, since you can build a group list from it later.
Import contacts from a file
- Click Contacts in the left sidebar, then click Import.
- Click Download example template and use it as the basis for your file. Matching the template is the simplest way to avoid a failed import.
- Attach your file, or drag it onto the upload area. It can be CSV, XLS or XLSX, one file, up to 10 MB.
- If you are importing a CSV, map each column to the matching contact field when prompted.
- Start the import, then follow its progress in Recent imports, which shows the date, type, status and result of each one. Click Refresh to update the status.
- Go back to the contact list and search for a few of the imported names to confirm everything arrived.
Prepare your file properly
- Start from the example template rather than an export from another system.
- Keep phone numbers in a consistent format, and include the country code where you can.
- Remove duplicates before importing. It is much easier than cleaning them up afterwards.
- Strip extra spaces and stray characters from the phone column if rows are rejected.
- Import a handful of rows first as a test, confirm they look right, then import the full file.
Other things you can do from the list
- Edit or Delete any contact from the Actions column.
- Select several contacts and use Delete selected to remove them at once.
- Click Export to download your contacts, which is a good habit before any large import.
- Group your contacts for bulk messaging with Create Contact Groups (Group Lists).
