How to Test Your Voice Agent Before Going Live
Make a controlled test call, check business answers and appointment booking, and verify call routing before sending customer calls to your receptionist.
Use this checklist for an incoming-call Voice Agent. It covers the receptionist’s greeting, business answers, booking and phone route. Outbound appointment-confirmation calls are not covered here.
1. Prepare a controlled test
- Open AI → Voice Agents in the correct location and review the receptionist you intend to test. If it has not been created, follow Create a Voice Agent for Your Business first.
- Coordinate with your team. Use a number you control and an agreed test appointment slot. Test bookings are real records and may trigger configured messages or reminders.
- Write down the current call destination and business-hours rule before anyone changes the route. Use a dedicated test number when available; otherwise agree on a controlled test window.
Ready when: you know which agent, number, calendar and expected route you are checking. Keep customer details out of test notes.
2. Check the phone route, then call
- Review Where it replies. Selecting a number provides caller ID; it does not, by itself, send incoming calls to the agent.
- Check the number’s Call Flow and the receptionist’s assigned extension. If a business-hours rule or IVR is involved, check that branch too. Follow Connect a Voice Agent to Your Phone Number and Call Flow for setup.
- From another phone, call the intended number and follow the same IVR choices a customer would use. Note the test time and whether the intended receptionist answers.
Pass: the call reaches the correct receptionist through the intended route. A voice preview is only a voice sample; it does not verify routing or booking.
3. Listen to the greeting and test business answers
- Listen for the correct business name, configured language and clear pronunciation. Ask a short, ordinary question such as “What are your opening hours?”
- Ask another question whose answer is in the selected knowledge base, such as the business address or a service you offer. Compare the answer with the approved information.
- Ask a question the business has not documented, such as the price of an unlisted service. Check that the agent does not invent an answer or promise an unsupported action.
Pass: answers match your information and the agent handles uncertainty appropriately. If None for now is selected, no knowledge base is attached. See the knowledge-base guide. If you use custom instructions, review Advanced instructions as well.
4. Test one appointment, if booking is enabled
- Review Schedule: selected calendar, available times and time zone. When there are multiple providers, note whether the agent should offer any available provider or ask who the caller wants.
- Ask to book the agreed test slot using your own test contact details. Listen to the date, time and provider repeated back. Also ask about an unavailable time to check that the agent offers an appropriate alternative instead of promising that slot.
- After completing the booking, open Appointments or Calendar and verify the actual record: correct date, time, calendar/provider and contact, with no unintended duplicate.
Pass: the record matches the conversation. A spoken “booked” is not enough without checking the appointment. If an SMS template is configured, check the message separately; a created appointment does not prove SMS delivery. With None — don’t send appointment SMS, no appointment SMS is expected from this setting. See booking and reminder settings.
5. Check daytime and after-hours behavior
- Review the number’s Business Hours rule, including its time zone and open/closed destinations.
- Test both intended routes at the appropriate times. Do not change the live business schedule just to force a test; coordinate an isolated route with your administrator if needed.
- Confirm daytime calls still reach the intended team and closed-hours calls reach the intended destination.
Pass: each time period follows the planned route. Selecting the After hours agent type does not configure the clock schedule. See Use a Voice Agent Outside Business Hours.
6. Record results and finish the test
Keep a short checklist: greeting, known answer, unknown answer, appointment record, optional SMS and open/closed routing. Mark each Passed, Needs attention or Not applicable, with the test time and expected versus actual result.
- Have your team cancel or remove its test appointment through the normal appointment workflow and check any pending test reminders.
- If the agent is not ready, have an authorized administrator restore the recorded previous call destination and make a verification call. Do not assume pausing the agent restores the old route.
- Repeat failed checks after the relevant correction. Use Voice Agent troubleshooting or contact Zonitel support with the location, agent name, test time and a brief description. Do not include passwords or private customer conversations.
Ready for customer calls: the required checks pass, the team knows the final route and any temporary test changes have been reviewed.
